Class Exercise 5: Search Engine Optimisation

(Gopakumar, 2020)

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation is the process of optimising a website in order to have a high visibility, and get a higher ranking in Google results when people search for a keyword related to a certain website or business. (Search engine optimization, 2021)

How does an SEO work?

According to Optimizely (2021), Search engines such as Google or Bing have numerous and complicated set of factors that can determine the ranking of the webpages in a certain given query. However, there are 3 core factors which every web engine uses in order to decide which webpage to rank first:

Links: Since it is unlikely for a website owner to recommend a website with a poor quality as that will also affect his website. Therefore, links from other websites are a major factor in ranking a webpage.
Content: Content is another factor that search engines use to rank webpages. The search engine analyses the webpage and its content in order to make sure that is it relevant to the query.
Page structure: Since all webpages are written in HTML, search engines analyse the structure of the HTML code. Therefore, if a webpage has a poor HTML coding structure it may be ranked poorly.
